This is an old family recipe. For many, bread pudding is for the poor, Me, I love it. It is probably because I eat out too often in restaurants for business. This is real home cooked food.
Ingredients:
Pudding:
- 375 ml bread (crust removed)
- 500 ml milk
- 125 ml sugar or brown sugar or even better, maple syrup
- 2 eggs
- 30 ml butter
- 2 ml nutmeg
Caramel sauce:
- 125 ml sugar
- 125 ml brown sugar
- 30 ml flour
- 15 ml butter
- 375 ml boiling water
Method:
- Place the bread in a baking dish (9 X 13 inches)
- Warm the milk and pour over the bread
- Mix the eggs and sugar and then the butter and nutmeg
- Pour egg mixture over the bread
- Bake at 3500 F until the pudding is firm (about 30 minutes)
- In a sauce pan over low heat, mix together the sugar, brown sugar, flour and butter
- Gradually increase the heat, until sugar begins to caramelize, and produce a slight burnt smell
- Add the boiling water and stir until the sugar has melted and the sauce has thickened
